The supermarket chain Coles has offered Simplot a new contract which would boost the quantity of frozen vegetable and potato products it buys from the struggling processor. It has offered Simplot a five-year contract which would see frozen vegetable and potato volume for its house brand products rise by 12 per cent. Coles says it also intends to ensure all the of vegetables in one of its house brand products are grown in Australia by next year. Simplot employs about 280 people at its Devonport plant but is reviewing its operations because of falling profits and rising costs. The company has been struggling to compete with cheap frozen vegetable imports and a high Australian dollar. Simplot is yet to comment on the deal. - September 25, 2013, 9:27 am
