274kg ephedrine found in rice from India (AAP) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

Federal police have seized nearly 300kg of ephedrine hidden in a shipment of rice from India to Melbourne.

Four people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the importation and intended distribution of the drug, which can be used as the foundation for making speed.

Police say the 274kg of ephedrine is one of the largest single seizures of the drug in Australia.

It resulted from a joint operation between the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Australian Customs and Border Protection service.

Further details about the operation will be released at a press conference later on Wednesday morning.
